Have decided not to do a mathematics degree via the OU as I mulled about in a previous post. I’m going to do self study for a few years using the books in the picture. Click on the picture for a larger view. I already have these books. So in addition it’s free entertainment and fits into my larger plan to pay off everything I owe and get to a debt free state as soon as possible (including paying of my mortgage).

I have the Road to Reality – about the time I graduated a friend and I got copies to work through. We certainly didn’t complete the book
. I think you’ve made the right decision regarding the OU degree – they’re very expensive and unless you need to demonstrate to an employer that you have degree-level maths, it’s money you don’t need to spend. My Dad has a statistics qualification from OU, but only because the boss paid for it…
Thanks Graham. The only reason I was thinking of doing it as a degree was to provide a framework and goalposts to keep me going. I don’t think I need them though. I have the motivation to do it self study.
OU Undergraduate degrees are not expensive for your first one as they are subsidised by the Government. I have one so it would be expensive to do another, as it wouldn’t be subsidised (quite rightly).
I’ll do some OU MSc stuff I think though. It’s not subsidised either and is very expensive but most people have employer support for those I think. I’m hoping to as well…
The shiny eBook Reader replaces the lecture and the printed textbook! Still, I hope you blog about your mathematical exploits and remind me of the degree I have gathering dust.
I was actually thinking of doing a series of posts here about self teaching myself maths…
